Here you may post messages or questions pertaining to the keeping and care of gerbils and their relatives such as duprasi, jirds, and jerboas. Many of the brown, furry-tailed rodents that have come to be known as gerbils originated from the deserts of Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. The Mongolian gerbil, commonly found in the pet trade, has even been developed into a veritable rainbow of furry colors—from the sandy brown or agouti—to albinos, grays, blacks, champagne, blues, piebald, and more.

Closely related to the Mongolian gerbil, Duprasi look similar to dwarf hamsters. However, they have a thick short tail that stores excess water and fat. Because of their tail, they sometimes are called "fat tail gerbils." Although Jirds are close relatives of gerbils, they lack the long hind feet and the erect posture of gerbils. Wild Indian Desert Jirds are diurnal (active in daytime), while the Indian gerbil species are nocturnal. Jerboas are small and have long tufted tails and long hind legs. Their wild cousins live in Asia and northern Africa.
